Some places on earth only appear on the amateur bands for a fortnight every few years. Working a DXpedition is how you reach them, and it is a different skill from ordinary operating: the station is rare, thousands of people want it at once, and almost everything that decides whether you get in the log happens before you press the key. Knowing when they are really on air, which band gives you a chance from your latitude, where they are listening and how the contact gets confirmed will do more for your DXCC total than another kilowatt.

What is a DXpedition?

A DXpedition is a trip made by amateur radio operators to a place that is rare on the air, in order to put it on the bands for everybody else. The destination is usually a DXCC entity with no resident amateurs: an uninhabited island, a research base, a territory where licences are hard to obtain, or somewhere simply too expensive to reach for a weekend. The ARRL DXCC list holds around 340 current entities, and perhaps thirty of them are on the air only when somebody organises an expedition.

Scale varies enormously. A holiday-style operation is one operator with a hundred watts and a vertical on the beach, running for a few evenings. A major expedition to somewhere like Bouvet or Crozet is a team of twenty, several stations on the air around the clock for two or three weeks, a chartered vessel, and a budget in six figures funded by clubs, foundations and individual donations. Both count, and both appear in the calendar on this site.

What they have in common is that they are announced in advance. That is what makes them plannable, and it is why a calendar of announcements is the first thing a DXer checks.

Announced is not the same as on air

An announcement is a plan, not a fact. Operations get delayed by visas, weather, boats and illness, they get cut short by generator failures and storms, and a few never leave home at all. A calendar built from announcements cannot know any of this: it knows the dates the team published, and nothing more. Treat every entry as a station that should be there, then confirm it independently before you spend an evening chasing it.

The reverse error is just as common. Silence in an on air panel does not prove the station is off the air, only that the particular feeds behind it have not seen the callsign recently. An SSB operation working Europe on 40 metres at midnight can be perfectly audible and still invisible to a network that mostly sees CW and FT8.

The three feeds behind the on air panel

The panel at the top of the tool crosses the announced list against three independent sources, and each of them has a different blind spot. Knowing which one lit up tells you how much to trust it.

Two or three sources agreeing at the same time means machines are confirming the station right now, and that is worth dropping what you are doing for. A single cluster spot means one person reported something. Neither the tool nor anything else can tell you whether they will hear you, which is a question of your aerial and their pile-up rather than their schedule.

Finding them: band, time and the path

A rare entity is not equally workable at all hours, and the announced band list tells you what the team intends to use, not what the ionosphere will allow between them and you. Work backwards from the path instead. The higher bands open along daylight paths and close after sunset, 20 metres is open somewhere for most of the day, and 40 and 80 metres carry long distances at night, particularly in the hour or so either side of sunrise and sunset at each end.

Two windows are worth marking in your diary for any expedition you seriously want. The first is the grey line, when the terminator crosses your station and theirs at the same time and absorption on the low bands drops away. The second is the first hour of the operation, before the rest of the world has noticed. On a well-publicised expedition that hour has gone by the time you read about it, but on a small one-operator trip it can be embarrassingly easy.

Before you commit an evening, check whether the band is doing anything at all on that path. The propagation score gives you a band-by-band figure from your own locator, and the HF propagation guide explains what the solar numbers behind it mean. If the score says 20 metres is your best band and the announcement says they are on 15, the honest answer is that tonight is not your night.

Working the pile-up

A pile-up is what happens when several hundred stations call the same station at the same moment. Nobody can be copied in that, so the DX station separates the callers by frequency: it transmits on one frequency and listens on a range of others, which is called working split. Everything about pile-up technique follows from that one fact.

How split working actually works

The DX station calls CQ on, say, 14.023 MHz and announces “up 5” or “up 5 to 10”. It is transmitting on 14.023 and listening between 14.028 and 14.033. Your radio needs to do the same thing in reverse: receive on 14.023, transmit somewhere in that listening window. Every modern transceiver has a split function and a second VFO for exactly this, and on most rigs a long press of the split key copies VFO A to VFO B so you can then move only the transmit frequency.

Calling on the DX station’s own transmit frequency is the classic beginner error. You will not be heard, because nobody there is listening, and you will be told about it in fairly direct terms by the people policing the frequency. If you cannot make your radio work split, listen and learn rather than calling: a single contact is not worth wrecking the frequency for everybody.

Finding where they are actually listening

Inside the announced window the operator does not tune at random. Most work in a pattern: they answer somebody, then move up a little for the next call, then jump back to the bottom of the window when they reach the top. Spend two or three contacts listening to the pile-up rather than to the DX, find the station that just got answered, and you know where the operator’s receiver is now. Then call slightly above it, not on top of it.

The rest is discipline. Send your full callsign once, then listen. Do not call while the DX station is transmitting. Do not send your call again while they are working somebody else. If they come back with a partial such as “7RDX”, answer with your full callsign twice and nothing else. And when the contact is done, log it and leave: calling again on another band ten minutes later, before the operator has moved, is how you become a name people mute.

QSL routes: getting the contact confirmed

A contact only counts towards an award once both stations confirm it. DXpeditions publish a QSL route before they leave, and it is worth reading while the operation is still running: chasing a route six months later, after the operator has gone home and the log has moved to a bureau, is how contacts get lost.

Most expeditions now upload to Club Log during or immediately after the trip, so you can check your callsign against the log before spending anything. If you are not in it, the honest conclusion is usually that the contact did not complete, however clearly you heard the report. Send a polite note with the date, time in UTC, band and mode, and accept the answer.

For award purposes Logbook of the World is the least painful route, because a match there credits DXCC without a card ever moving. A paper card is still the nicer thing to have on the shack wall, and for a place you will never work again it is worth the postage.

From announcement to confirmed contact

Put together, a DXpedition worth chasing runs through the same five steps every time. Find the announcement, ideally weeks ahead, and add the dates to your calendar so the operation does not start without you. Decide which band and which hour give you a real path, rather than turning the radio on when you happen to be free.

Then confirm they are genuinely on the air, using the on air panel or a search of the live DX cluster for the callsign. Work them split, once, with the technique above. Finally, check the online log a day or two later and start the QSL route while the operation is still fresh in everybody’s mind.

If you miss them on the first pass, do not give up on day one. Most expeditions save the low bands and the difficult paths for the second week, when the initial pile-up has thinned and the operators have worked out which hours actually produce contacts into which continents.

Frequently asked questions

What does DXCC mean, and how many entities are there?

DXCC is the ARRL DX Century Club, the award for working and confirming 100 different entities. An entity is not the same as a country: separate islands, overseas territories and some special cases each count on their own, which is why the list runs to around 340 rather than to the number of nations at the United Nations.

What does “up 5” mean when a DXpedition is calling?

It means the station is listening 5 kHz above its own transmit frequency. You set your radio to receive where you hear them and transmit 5 kHz higher, using the split function. “Up 5 to 10” means the listening window is 5 to 10 kHz above, and you may call anywhere inside it.

How do I find the exact frequency they are listening on?

Listen to the pile-up instead of the DX station. Find the caller who has just been answered, and that is where the operator’s receiver was a moment ago. Most operators then step slowly up the window and return to the bottom when they reach the top, so calling just above the last successful station is the highest-percentage move.

Can I work a DXpedition with 100 watts and a wire?

Yes, and most people do. Big expeditions run several stations for weeks specifically so that modest stations get a chance once the first rush is over. Pick a band where your antenna is at its best, operate in the second week rather than the first, and use CW or FT8 if you have them, because both get through several decibels lower than SSB.

What is a pilot station?

A pilot station is a volunteer at home who relays information between the expedition and the rest of the world: which bands are producing, which continents are being favoured, and when the team plans to move. Large expeditions appoint one per continent and publish their callsigns on the operation website.

What is a band slot, and why do DXers chase them?

A band slot is one entity worked on one band, sometimes counted separately per mode. DXCC offers awards for single bands, so a serious DXer who already has the entity confirmed will come back for it on 80 metres, or on CW, and that is why the pile-up does not disappear after the first weekend.

Why do they ignore me when I can hear them perfectly?

Hearing is not symmetrical. A DXpedition typically runs more power and better antennas than the average caller, so their signal reaching you says little about yours reaching them through several hundred simultaneous callers. Calling in the wrong part of the split window, or at the same moment as everybody else, accounts for most of the rest.

How long does a QSL from a DXpedition take?

Electronic confirmation through Logbook of the World often arrives within days of the team getting home. A card ordered through Club Log OQRS usually takes a few weeks, a direct request to a QSL manager one to six months, and the bureau route between one and three years. Check the online log first: if the contact is not there, no route will produce a card.
