Tropospheric ducting forms under high pressure inversions and regularly supports contacts well past 1,000 km on 144 MHz. Sporadic E opens 50 MHz across Europe in short, intense bursts through early summer. Meteor scatter reflects signals off ionisation trails lasting under a second, worked with MSK144 in 15 second sequences and most productive around the annual shower peaks. Aircraft scatter and auroral reflection add further paths.
Antenna and receiver quality decide results more than power does. A well built Yagi at height, fed with low loss coax into a quiet receive path, will consistently outperform a larger amplifier driving a compromised system.
